An estate cleanout checklist for families

May 26, 2026 · 8 min read

Clearing a family home is logistics wrapped around grief. The logistics part is the only bit anyone can help with, so here’s a sane order of operations.

1. Secure the documents first

Before anything moves, collect wills, deeds, insurance policies, tax records, bank statements, and anything with an account number. Put them in one box that leaves with a named person. This single step prevents most estate-cleanout disasters.

2. Then the small valuables

Jewellery, watches, coins, and photographs. These are the items most often lost, and the hardest to replace once a room is cleared.

3. Let family choose, with a deadline

Give relatives a defined window to claim what they want. Open-ended timelines are how a house sits half-cleared for eight months. A date on the calendar keeps things moving without forcing anyone.

4. Get an appraisal if anything might be valuable

Antiques, art, instruments, and older furniture are worth a second opinion before donation. A single appraisal appointment costs less than the regret.

5. Then clear the rest

This is where a removal crew helps most — the volume stage, once the decisions are made. Ask for donation routing so usable furniture and clothing go to local charities, and request a summary if the estate needs it for records.

Go at your own pace

Rooms can be done one at a time across several visits. Any company that pressures you to do it all in one appointment is optimising for their schedule, not your situation.
